Dry Skin

During winter season or all year round, dry skin for pets has been a common problem. Dry skin results from the excessive loss of moisture from the outer layer of the skin. When the skin begins to dry, it becomes to brittle and flaking follows.

Dry skin may be attributed to many factors like parasites, infections, the environment, weather, hereditary, dietary disorders, or hormonal imbalances. If your pets do have some trouble in dealing with one of these factors, consult your veterinarian.

The symptoms of dry skin itself may last to a lifetime. Therefore it requires a long period for therapy. Immediate treatment may be necessary for some cases because further complications may come out, such as skin bacterial infection due to too much chewing or scratching.

Complications

Pet scratching can be for several reasons including infection, allergies, and parasites or in more general dry skin. But immediate home treatment may not be always helpful for it may even make matters worse. A veterinarian’s opinion is essential in diagnosing skin conditions for pets.

Sometimes skin problems are signs of other health conditions in adrenal or thyroid glands, kidney, and liver. So it is not always safe to presume that skin ailments are on the surface only.

However, the following symptoms may suggest that your pets may have more than just dry skin:

• Open sores or wounds
• Bumps or redness of the skin resulting to rashes
• Hair loss in patches or all over your pet’s body
• Continuous face-rubbing and foot-licking

Home Treatment

As early mentioned, home treatment may not always be helpful. But if you have clearance from your veterinarians, then you can begin household treatments for your pet’s dry skin.

1. Use Sulphur in treating skin redness
2. Use Phosphorus in cases of hair loss and dandruff
3. Use Carbo Veg. for itching or moist skin
4. Rhustox may be effective for dermatitis from poison ivy or flea bites
5. Arsenicum Album may be recommended for dry or scaly skin
6. Try Cinchona Officinalis to remedy sensitive skin
7. Use Urtica Urens for red blotching on the skin
